The Young Members Group (YMG) of the North America Branch (NAB) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is pleased to announce that Lena Raxter is the winner of CIArb NAB YMG’s Second Annual Writing Competition!

Ms. Raxter is a Dual-Degree JD Candidate at American University, Washington College of Law, and the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law (Common Law Section).  Her winning paper is titled: “RESPONSIBILITY AFTER SUCCESSION: The Work of the International Law Commission and its Application for Seeking Redress after the Breach of Investor-State Agreements,” and it addresses the ILC’s program of work regarding “Succession of States in respect of State responsibility” and its application since codification.

Ms. Raxter’s article was selected on a blind basis by a distinguished panel of judges, comprised of Stavros Brekoulakis (Professor of Law at Queen Mary University; Associate Member of 3 Verulam Buildings; and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Arbitration, Mediation, and Dispute Management); Kevin Clark (Managing Counsel at Total Specialties USA, Inc.); Edgardo Muñoz López (Professor of Law at Universidad Panamericana; Founder of Munoz – Lopez & Associates PLLC; CISG Advisory Council Member); Harrie Samaras (Independent Arbitrator; Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators; Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators; Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators); Mallory Silberman (Partner at Arnold & Porter LLP); and Wendy K. Venoit (Partner at Hinckley Allen LLP).

As the competition winner, Ms. Raxter will receive a $2,500.00 honorarium from CIArb NAB and priority consideration for publication in the International Journal of Arbitration, Mediation and Dispute Management.  In anticipation of this announcement, Professor Stavros Brekoulakis, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Arbitration, Mediation, and Dispute Management, has already confirmed publication of Ms. Raxter’s article in the Journal!
