Steve Bauer, a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the College of Commercial Arbitrators, has devoted his career to helping parties resolve complex business and legal disputes, particularly in the fields of technology and life sciences licensing, as well as intellectual property—including patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and copyrights.

His practice is international in scope. Steve is on the JAMS Global Panel, the CPR Panel, and the IP Panel for WIPO.  He chairs the ADR Committee of AIPPI, the world’s largest international IP law society, and is listed on the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center’s prestigious Tech List. Before joining JAMS in 2020, Steve served on the American Arbitration Association’s national panel for more than 30 years, including its International Life Sciences and Complex Disputes panels. He has acted as neutral or advocate in arbitrations in the U.S., France, Germany, Switzerland, and the U.K., involving parties from North America, Europe, and Asia.

Throughout his career, Steve has specialized in disputes at the cutting edge of science and technology. His cases have encompassed gene-based diagnostics and therapies; advanced medical devices such as heart valves, surgical instruments, and proton beam systems; satellite and wireless networks; consumer electronics; lithium-ion battery chemistry; high-temperature superconductors; and MEMS and semiconductor technologies.

Steve joined JAMS after a distinguished private practice career, including 17 years at Proskauer, where he co-chaired both the IP Litigation Practice Group and the firm’s Litigation Department, and served on its Executive Committee. Chambers USA consistently ranked him among Boston’s top five IP trial lawyers, praising him as “a client’s number one choice,” “results-oriented,” “a great strategist,” “pragmatic and flexible,” and “the litigator that clients want.” IAM recognized him as an IP Global Leader, while Super Lawyers named him three times among Boston’s “Top 100” lawyers.

Beyond practice, Steve has been deeply engaged in teaching and thought leadership. From 2012 to 2021, he taught MIT’s undergraduate course on intellectual property. He has also been a Visiting Lecturer and Adjunct Professor at Boston University School of Law, teaching patent law and litigation, IP trial advocacy, and computer law.

His service extends to professional and community institutions. Steve sits on the Board of the Lurie Boston IP Inn of Court and has previously served on BU Law’s Dean’s Advisory Board, the Advisory Board of the Boston Museum of Science, the Advisory Board of the Huntington Theatre, and the Editorial Board of the AIPLA Quarterly Journal.

Steve earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from MIT in electrical engineering and computer science with a biomedical focus. He began his legal career as a law clerk to Judge Philip Nichols, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.

Outside the law, Steve is an instrument-rated pilot.
